Green Manifesto Launched
Tuesday 16th September 2008 will be remembered for two things; the commemoration of International Ozone Day and the launch of the Green Manifesto: Framework for a Sustainable Nation.
The Green Manifesto promises to be the alternative development plan for Trinidad and Tobago, and will be prepared by a team of persons representing numerous community and citizen interest groups.
The host of the launch and a key member of the project, the Congress of the People (COP), has maintained that this manifesto is beyond the scope of traditional partisan politics and calls on all interested parties and groups to build a movement towards realizing true and genuine sustainable development.
It is expected that the manifesto will take eighteen months to be developed after holding community and stakeholder consultations across Tobago and Trinidad.
Green Manifesto Chairperson, Wendy Lee Yuen commented that “topics under the microscope will include building an agricultural sector that will provide food security for the nation, and reducing poverty by investing in human resource development and new technologies, including energy technologies or ET.”
Numerous presenters made brief statements regarding agriculture, fisheries, eco-tourism, recycling, and the future of energy in Trinidad and Tobago.
The launch was attended by over 200 citizens representing community, non-governmental, and social groups, as well as diplomatic missions and international agencies in Trinidad and Tobago.
